One thing I have always found such joy in is flowers. I love how even a simple handful of daffodils can brighten up a room and especially the notion of communication without words. I’ve always thought they are rather special things, flowers. I arranged my first vase of flowers as a child, knelt on a wooden chair at the kitchen table with my Grandmother. She used to make fantastic arrangements which still pose a rather poignant part of my childhood or particularly my love for florals.
I have searched many years for postal flowers that withold the quality of those marvellous bouquets of a local florist and I wanted to share quite possibly the best online florist in the UK.
Freddies Flowers
“like the milkman but with flowers”
Freddie’s Flowers is a subscription services where you are sent quite possibly one fo the most beautiful, quality flowers each week. You can customise your deliveries to receive flowers fortnightly, or skip weeks and you’re able to cancel at any time (not that you’ll ever want to!).
Freddie started his wonderful fresh flower business from his parents’ back garden enlisting a few of his friends to help with deliveries with a milk float for transport. I love how his business has quite literally blossomed and now delivering flowers to people internationally in a sustainable and ethical way.
The flowers featured in this post are from the last week of February and the first week of March. each week comes the most beautifully designed guide on how to arrange the flowers that week as well as a message from Freddie. These additions provide a step-by-step guide on flower arranging as well as outlining the meanings of each element of the bouquet which is quite possibly my favourite addition. The collaboration with artists is also something I particularly enjoy.
Lust For Life (Eros)
la lily, eryngium, hypericum, tulip, snapdragon, iris, eucalyptus
This arrangement was created by Freddie to visualise passion and a lust for life and he certainly created a masterpiece here. In the accompanying paperwork he talks about the lifecycle of a flower and how it gives such a great example of living life to its fullest, I think this resonated particularly well with the theme of this website but also for me personally so I thought I would share this with you all –
“In many ways, the lifecycle fo a flower is one of the best examples we could look to for living life to its fullest. Flowers and delicate, but they spend their lives reaching for the sun, striving to live and bring jot, beauty and happiness to all who look at them. Oh, to be a flower! I cant think of a better way to live!
but since we cant all be flowers, we have to find out own passions to help us live out own lives to the fullest! Like cooking up wonderful new ideas in the kitchen for friends and family, putting our imaginations to paper with a paint brush or simple opening up out minds to new things”
– Freddie @ Freddie’s Flowers
Freddie chose to lead this arrangement with the colour he feels best represents passion – red. Starting off we have beautifully deep pink snapdragons which adds a sophisticated pop of colour along with the iris within the heights of the arrangement.
Next up is Eryngium which adds the perfect texture which Freddie chose as he felt the prickly spikiness of it provides a perfect visual representation of that sudden burst of energy we often get to get up and get going.
The tulip of choice in this arrangement is the Kung Fu variety which continues to grow in height throughout the week. Further playing into the theme of this week with its growing passion as the stem grows and grows to reach the sun.
Lastly, the lilies! My absolute favourite in any arrangement more often than not and the colour of these is absolutes magnificent. Red lilies can re[resent love but also respect, desire, and courage which I a perfect attribute to the overall theme of this bouquet.
Artist in Residence – The Art of Flowers
la lily, solidago, tulip, snapdragons, chasmanthus, cherry blossom
This weeks bouquet is in collaboration with the artists Rose Electra Harris, a London based printmaker and painter. Fascinated by colour, texture, and pattern, Rose explores her interior space using the obscure and everyday objects to create her still lifes. Her paintings are rich in vibrant colour and unique using her emotions to portray a distorted and ever so slightly off-kilter perspective.
This bouquet reflects Rose’s unique perception is it one of structure starting with Columbus double tulips at the bottom. These tulips have “double” the amount of petals than a normal tulip with stunning pint petals with a yellow edge.
Moving upwards through the layers of this masterpiece of an arrangement we have some lovely Solidago providing a wonderful pop of yellow, echoing the yellow tips of the tulips as a beautifully balanced transition upwards from the tulips.
Next we have the LA lilies which are quite possibly the most glorious shade of pink. Lilies are my absolute favourite I think by rather a large amount.
Moving even further up into the higher blooms are snapdragons which are another firm favourite of mine. These are a beautiful soft pink complementing the lilies wonderfully. I have fond memories of plucking these flowers and making them “snap” their mouths as if they really were dragons.
Next we have the most strikingly unique chasmanthus blooms injecting some fire into the arrangement with their bursts of orangey pink rather like the floral equivalent of a fire breathing dragon.
Lastly, and maybe my favourite element of this arrangement we have cherry blossom blooming steadily over the course of the week. I adore how the layers of this arrangement really do come together beautifully evoking Rose’s work perfectly.
They even have an online shop full of glorious vases of all shapes and sizes, frames and flower presses to preserve your blooms and other flower arranging accessories. I particularly love the classic vase, a real beast of an apothecary vase which is the main one I have been using. It holds large arrangements beautifully and it is absolutely going to be firm favourite of mine. I also own the cut down version which is equally as wonderful and perfect for smaller arrangements or to transfer a thinned down version of the previous weeks flowers.
